MrMaycock.com The blog of a nineteen year old university student

21Dec/09

Wow.

So I last posted 54 days ago. Hmm.

November was fun, December has been fun so far.

I can't be bothered post things here any more.

Twitter's just more convenient.

However! The past 54 days in one, long, sentence:

I got drunk a lot, I bought an iPhone, I bought another Xbox 360 (this one was more awesome as it was a MW2 250 GB Super Elite), it snowed, I bought Spirit Tracks for the DS, and LEGO Rock Band, The Ballad of Gay Tony and Fable II (plus MW2) for the Xbox 360, I did okay at laser questing for Rachel's birthday, my netbook's SSD died catastrophically, I handed in five assignments (one of which involved a pretty damn good recreation of Duck Hunt), I finished three exams (two Maths, one Comp. Arch), I uploaded four YouTube videos totalling 28 minutes of fun, I scrobbled 2188 songs, I went to the fireworks at Markeaton Park and they were quite fun, I got re-obsessed with Weebl's Stuff and came oh-so close to buying an Insanity Prawn Boy plushie, I also got re-obsessed with Charlie the Unicorn, I had an ear infection, I bought too many games on Steam, I finished the last few Tales of Monkey Island episodes, I procrastinated, I got Google Wave and used it twice, I bought Sainsbury's Basics chocolate numerous times as it wasn't that bad, and there were two fire drills (FFFFUUU) and one actual fire (which interrupted my 1 vs 100 playing) at halls.

I love it. =)

Last post ever probably, Twitter is where it's at. =D

To finish, the four YouTube videos. The last two are my favourites. =)

And of course, if you're reading on Facebook, those videos: first, second, third, fourth.

Plans for the near future: procrastinate more, eat lots, go out with friends, then start working. Woo. =)

28Oct/09

October in Derby, in words.

Soo I'm in Derby.

And have been for 38 days now. Mad really.

Anyway, I appeared to not be bothered to post all through October, so I thought that I'd just do a retrospective today, on my birthday. I'm 19 now. =)

Since the last post, I've done quite a bit. The shopping centre lockdown being one. It wasn't very good. Did get some free Schuh bags, loads of free pretzels and lots of free Vitamin Water though. And I did see Vernon Kay from a distance.

Next thing was the following Thursday, October 1st, as we went out to see The Final Destination. Which was as hilarious as Final Destination movies are. However, that day was also pretty shit as I had spent the day running around Derby, Keddleston and Halls, causing me to lose my debit card and therefore access to my money. Clumsy idiot.

Friday brought another Mosh, which was also great fun. Saturday did not bring a Ghost Walk, as the SU fails.

Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday brought socialising at Mr. Adam Biddulph's, of course. Tuesday was extra interesting as Sophie, Ryan and I went into Derby for food and shopping, they had mexican food, I wish I did. Then the socialising afterwards was mainly based around watching Eden Lake, to which I will withhold my opinion.

Friday was another evening at Mosh (with Police and everything), then I had a nice, calm weekend. When I felt quite ill. Fail.

The next Monday (12th) was a day in Derby town with Adam and Dave, then Adam made stir fry which was nice. Wednesday the 14th was a great day, as we went to see Up at the cinema. Aaand, this was also the day my replacement debit card arrived, so I could start spending money on food again. Good times. Up was brilliant, by the way. Pretty damn stupid it aired in America in May, in my opinion, but whatevers. =)

The day after that was pretty eventful too. This was because I was in university from 11-8, then I was drinking from 9-1. I'd have to say that was the most drunk I've ever felt, probably was the red wine I downed. Anyway, I then fell asleep around 4am, which probably wasn't the best idea knowing I had to be in a lecture at 9am the following day. Even worse was that the lecture was quite interesting but I really couldn't pay much attention. Ah well.

That weekend was also pretty eventful. Spent almost all of Saturday at either my flat, Sophie's flat or Add's flat, and my Sunday was spent out with my parents, or out drinking with Adrian Harris for his 19th birthday. Good weekend. =)

Tuesday 20th was a fun day, loads of us went down to Westfield to enjoy some Noodle bar goodness, but I couldn't cope with that, so I had a Chinese box, which was still scrummy.

Thursday was then another mad evening. As Beth came up for the weekend, Sophie had a little get-together that was to evolve into a night out in Derby, which it never did. Ah well. Lots of people consumed far too much alcohol, but good times were still had, and it was really nice to see Beth again. Also, pizza at one in the morning is awesome.

The Friday was not so good to start with. As I didn't leave until about 3am, I didn't really fall asleep until after 4am, and as always I have to be in Keddleston on a Friday for 9am. So I get up at 7am. I did get up at 7am, but then I fell asleep. Whoops. I got up 15 minutes before I had to be at university, thank fuck the bus arrived on time I must say. =) However, one problem with so little sleep was that through the oh-so-very detailed and complicated lecture, none of it made any sense. Bit of a fail. Did get better though, scored 100% in the second BMT test and got myself a score of 324,350 on Bejewelled Blitz (proof biznatches), which was awesome. Then I hurried back to halls, got everything ready to spend a weekend at home. Which was different, as in the past five weeks my room has been completely redone, with me now having a double bed, wardrobe, new carpet, new colours. Madness. I also had my hair cut so it's no longer madly long, thank fuck.

Then the Saturday was great fun, went over to Lichfield with parents and sister, nom nommy breakfast in Wetherspoons. Then the evening was spent in the Garam Masala in Chadsmoor. Gawd, I ate so much food. But it was so gorgeous. Back to Derby on the Sunday. And Sunday evening was spent reinstalling Snow Leopard and Windows 7 retail (both sexy operating systems baby).

Monday the 26th was a nice lie-in, then went into Derby with Adam, Dave, Peter and Sarah. Bought the last part of my Halloween costume (beard and moustache), another sexy sexy Ferrero Rocher milkshake from Shakin' It, and just a generally nice day out. I also made an omelette. I decided that it was nom nom, therefore and om nom nomelette.

Yesterday was quite standard, did head over to Add's for a bit to talk with Dave and Sarah.

But now it's my birthday. As I'm actually writing this at like one in the morning, I'll put what I expect to be doing today. At 7am I'll wake up, watch Diggnation, get ready then head over to Nottingham with some people (Adam, Sarah, maybe some others) for today's GameCity stuff. As recommended by our Ludology lecture, we're going to see Something Splendid. (event), then maybe having a look around the IndieCade gallery and I really wanna play some Projector Games. I'm then heading around Nottingham going shopping for a bit, then heading back for Computer Architecture. I then think people might be coming to my flat for cake, Lips and Rock Band, then we should hopefully be heading to the cinema to watch something. Then I'll rest.

How close that'll actually be followed I'm sure I'll tweet through the day. =D

Anyway, I'mma now gonna talk about what I've been doing in my university modules. As I feel I should.

In alphabetical order, Basic Mathematical Techniques is first. So far it's been quite simple to me, and I'm so glad I took A2-Level Maths. Gonna start getting harder soon with differentiation, but I'm sure I'll cope. =)

Computer Architecture is next. Has been some interesting lectures in it, but it's also hella confusing. It's all about how data is stored and how computers function, which is quite interesting, but difficult when we're programming some processor. Maybe, I must say, haven't done it yet.

Third would be Ludology. I'm really enjoying Ludology, I must say. So far, I've learnt how to use Game Maker (sort of), given two presentations (one about Perplex City which was successful, one about the SNES which could not have gone worse) and created an iPhone prototype game, an accompanying economics report and a pitch video. It's great fun. Apart from the SNES presentation, that was so embarassing. 45 minutes to prepare a presentation about something no-one in the group doesn't know about when lots of other people in the room do know is mean. Ah well.

Fourth is Software Development I. This is probably my favourite so far, as I love the programming. Doing completely mad and random things in it, but it's really quite enjoyable.

And finally, there's The Computing Environment. Nothing much to say here, I see it as useful as my A Level in ICT.

Anyway, more stuff!

If you so wish, you can download a copy of my Game Maker iPhone prototype game from here (Windows only, I don't claim to own the images). Promise I'm not trying to give you viruses. If you're so interested to find my pitch video, you can find it here. I refuse to show you my economics document. =)

As I'm sure my friends from Wyrley and Derby know, I love videos, and I prefer them to photos personally. More life. Anyway, so far, I've created two and a half videos from my time in Derby, with the half becoming whole this weekend. The two videos are below (or this link and this link).

To finish off, I'd like to say thanks to UoD for letting me on the course, a note of if you want to survive at halls you really need an ethernet switch, Facebook and Last.fm on the Xbox are awesome, and finally I love my friends. =)

(I need to do these more regularly, as I'm probably forgetting big important things. Ah well.)

28Sep/09

Blog Post 280.

I couldn't think of a title. Shame.

The past four weeks.

Fucking busy.

Okay, going back to the start of September, I got a new phone, I missed rounded corners on Facebook pictures, went to Ikea, installed Snow Leopard, had major problems with MrMaycock.com, hosted a Harry Potter party (I'm just that cool), bought tickets to see Derren Brown next year (excited!), sorted out Natwest, bought The Beatles: Rock Band, decided to buy a Forza 3 Xbox 360, and my reaction to Derren Brown sticking me to my seat was hysterical laughter.

Then I moved up to Derby. It's fun here. Lots of fun new people, fun new places, fun education. And hard education.

Last Saturday was relatively standard, apart from the whole moving myself up here, which included three games consoles, one HDTV, one iMac and a lots of other things. Played some Buzz at Mr. Adam Biddulph's, that was about it. Oh, I fell asleep around 12, which was weird. But ultimately necessary, as I do need to be awake early each day. Which is something I haven't been doing regularly since May. Other thing about that Saturday was the lack of people talking like pirates. There is always next year.

Sunday was fun, as it was the pub meetup with the CGMA and CGP course peoples. Then it was the street party, which was also quite fun. I do want to go back to Blue Note, mainly as they played Lady Gaga, La Roux and Queen in succession. I loves it. The Old Bell Hotel was obviously the place to be, plus a Vodka + Coke for £1.40 was very nom nom and I drank a few of those. =D

Monday was also fun, as I was up at Keddleston doing induction things. We had a general chat, then a CGP talk, had a fabulously fun presentation about the library then a quick university tour. Then lunch, then we built some bridges out of spaghetti and string. The team I was in won, as we were awesome and built a suspension bridge. And then we went to Add's to play Buzz (I so won one game), watched some videos off of YouTube and talked some more. =)

Tuesday was more induction fun. I thought it was funny when people turned up 50 minutes late into a one hour session. Then there was more lectures and stuff like that, not very exciting stuff. Tuesday evening was just creepy. We met Bill Jones. He's 79. That's all you need to know.

Wednesday was more induction-y things. Then it was enrolment. What a wonderful three hour long process. Two of those were just spent waiting for my course leader's signature, after that it was quite speedy. And then I got my student ID card. Which is meh. It'll do. =) Then on the evening, we wondered over to Markeaton Park, had a walk around, played with Add's Frisbee, went on the swings and the slides, and lounged around the skate park for a bit. Then we got some chips, and went back to Add's to play Buzz. =)

Thursday was not the most enjoyable days. We went walking around the Derbyshire countryside with the Computing faculty. The first hour or so was quite nice and gentle, nice views and stuff. And then we walked up a fucking long hill. And steep. I did not enjoy that at all. Then we had a few hours to lounge around in Bakewell, where everything is so expensive. We did find this nice pasta shop and I had a spaghetti carbonara which was quite nice. Fun group of people to talk to, as we talked about fun things like Fable, Modern Warfare, Halo, Salad Fingers, Charlie the Unicorn and Devo. Fun. =) And then we went to Add's to play Buzz.

Friday was quite uneventful really. Was gonna have a lie-in, but I just couldn't be bothered. So I cleaned my room, and put stuff away. There's still loads to sort out, but I've got some underbed storage and a little tower thing so I just need to find the time. I also decided against pre-ordering the Forza 3 Super Xbox 360 Elite. As I played the Forza 3 demo, and hated it. It reminded me how I now only like racing games where the aim is to crash or piss other people off. À la Burnout and Mario Kart really. I did pre-order the Modern Warfare 2 Super Elite though, as that is gonna be awesome whatever happens. Friday evening was über awesome though, as we went to Mosh, which has the best music ever. Especially the ground floor. Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, Journey, stuff like that. Fabulous.

Saturday involved me getting into The World Ends With You for the DS. As I'd never really played enough to be interested in it before, but now I'm enjoying it. It's good fun. =) Then we went over to Peter's to play some Castle Crashers and eat some Pizza and cookie blob. Very nice, fun evening in general.

Sunday was different. Parents came up to bring up stuff I forgot, bring up mail and to also buy me lunch. Which was nice and nom nommy. I've also got my Rock Band instruments which is cool, as I've missed guitaring some Beatles songs. Sunday evening was questionable, not really quite sure if I enjoyed it that much. Still, it was free, so it could've been much worse. Lots of fun Catholic prodding, but I was expecting more Simon Bird stand up. Which was a shame. Anyway, then we came back to mine to play some Rock Band, and then we went to Add's to play Buzz (I so won one game).

Today was also different. Though teaching has started, I have free Mondays. So I left here late-ish, went to Keddleston around 11.30-ish, and it was Freshers' Fair. It was quite amazing. Overall, I picked up 62-ish leaflets/flyers/brochures/vouchers, one medi:syn boy T-Shirt, one Go Hard or Go Home Walkabout T-shirt, one Size Does Matter! pink T-shirt from Varsity, one pair of I Love Vodka boxers, one bible, one keyring, three bottle openers, one Mosh condom, one light-up Vodka Kick button, one light-up Coyote Wild button, 10 teabags, one Lynx Instinct deodorant bullet, one mug, one Varsity spanking bat, seven pens including one that lights up when you hit it, two free drinks at Coyote Wild, one free shot at Varsity, three lollipops, lots of sweets, two free bowls of chips at Varsity, one I Love Vodka lanyard and poster, one Revolution voucher book, 15% off at Toni&Guy, some post-its, a temporary tattoo, four slices of pizza, one medi:syn drawstring bag, one Varsity vCard, one candyfloss stick, one Wetherspoons cheap things wristband, two cups of free popcorn and a lighter. I also picked up my NUS card, which is nice, sexy and green. I also sorted out my UDo account so I can now login to the Derby network. Mr. Darke was just on Eggheads (but he lost, which is not what we expected). And finally, my parents have just been told that I have been financially assessed and will be getting a full £2906 grant.

Oh, to see my Freshers' Fair things, go here, here and here.

That has been Freshers' fortnight for me so far. Met lots of fun new people, been lots of new fun places, and starting sleeping early. Teaching starts tomorrow, which should be interesting. Also, Vernon Kay at the shopping centre party tomorrow, which should also be interesting

However, to finish today off, I'm gonna go cook myself a Lamb Rogan Josh, and I may head over to Syn or Mosh later, or maybe just lounge around having fun.

I love Derby.

30Jul/09

Four weeks.

That is the amount of time since I last posted here. Which probably explains why my Google Analytics are showing lower numbers than usual.

I'd post more, but I haven't really done anything substantial. Plus, I've been tweeting more and more, kind of reducing the purpose. (Did you know that my top five tweeted words are fun, good, tomorrow, played, and yay?)

I've done a few things though.

I've been to the cinema three times in the past two weeks, seeing Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince twice, and The Proposal once, and all of them were really good fun. The Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince game was alright, not as length as others in the series, but did fill in story bits that the movie obviously missed out. I've also started reading the Harry Potter books again, for fun. I'm also listening to the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince soundtrack, as I'm awesome. It's awesome too. =)

School wise, I've been to two events, being the school's summer concert and the school's awards. Both were good fun, must say.

Open University wise, I've completed my second course today. Though the other had Molymod, this was more interesting. Really good fun, think I've done alright, but I probably did give up towards the end of the written questions.

That was because my iMac started dying strangely last night, which was probably the worst time it could have happened. But it did. The clicking sound that has existed for some time was getting quite a bit worse recently. However, last night, Leopard started crashing and restarting, and took about 10 minutes to boot up. And I'm getting errors on the Apple Hardware Test. So I'm gonna call AppleCare tomorrow and get it picked up or whatever happens with Apple servicing. Good job I bought the AppleCare when I did, really.

Oh, as well as calling AppleCare, I'll probably go into Cannock. Why? Because I love Twitter! I have somehow managed to successfully redeem two Marketplace codes for Gears of War 2. Though I don't own it, who would turn down a Gold-Plated Lancer which is like a limited edition exclusive, or the new All Front DLC (which contains 19 multiplayer maps and another campaign level) costing 1600 MSP. All through Twitter. I think those are the only codes I've gotten off Twitter, but they're pretty damn good. Anyway, because of owning all this content, and due to the fact that I'm running out of games, I'm gonna buy Gears of War 2, and some AA batteries from Home Bargains. The AA batteries because I think my dad is noticing the AA batteries are going quite quickly.

Ooh! I could buy a black Play & Charge Kit. Depends on the prices, I suppose.

Strange, my iMac has now been fine for the entire time of writing this post so far. I don't care, I still want it serviced. The clicking is pissing me off.

Firefox's British Dictionary is missing the word movie. Strange.

Anyway.

Found some old and fun DigiCook audio outtakes that once existed on digicook.co.uk, but that website ceases to exist. Anyway, here is the lemons outtakes: (mp3 link)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

And here are just some more general outtakes: (mp3 link)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

These are obviously in addition to the healthy extras we have on the DVD itself. Hah, Young Enterprise. What japes.

I may paint my room. The blue it currently is ain't too fun. Plus, there's dust everywhere, which ain't good.

Hmm.

I'm running out of things to say.

Oh!

YouTube. From our trip back home from the cinema when we saw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, I recorded 30 minutes of video. From prom, I got about six. Put those together along with Katy Perry and you get my first YouTube video of July.

And the second one is when you just condense the video footage back from the cinema and have no other music on the back. Which is this one.

I think I'm done now.

I've missed posting. Might do it more if I was doing more interesting things. Oh well, results day in three weeks and Lostprophets in four, can't wait. =)

3Jul/09

Harriet, no, Elliot Minor + The Mission District.

What a fun day it's been.

After what I believe was a night of no sleep, I arose from my room around 12, and cleaned my room some more. Spent about an hour trying to get my books to stay on my shelves right, but they're still constantly falling off. How persistent and annoying.

Anyway, got dressed and ready for the gig tonight, which would be Elliot Minor + The Mission District.

Had McDonald's.

Queued.

Saw David from The Mission District. He was awesome. He gave us a leaflet.

Then we were inside.

It was oh, so very hot. (Almost like there has been a heatwave recently.)

Anyway, The Mission District came on. They were awesome for many reasons, mainly for they sang awesome songs (including the best Lady Gaga/Rihanna/Michael Jackson mix you ever did hear), and they were awesome. They were also sweaty, as jumping + thrown water + bad ventilation + lots of lights was true.

Elliot Minor were on next, obviously, as they were headlining. They came on to Jessica, which somehow caused me to go from basically the back of the room to essentially the front. Which made the evening a lot more enjoyable, I must say, Played some good songs, a few new songs, maybe a few too many, but they were still very good.

Also, fun merchandise. Signed Elliot Minor poster for £5 was a bargain and is awesome. Also got David from The Mission District's signature. May go see them live in September, if I can drag my self away from Fresher's fortnight at Derby.

Then McDonald's again, but only for a drink this time.

Then we were on the Last Train Home, (Lostprophets in 2059 hours baby).

That was an experience, I must say.

So we're (Aimee, Adam and I) sitting around a table, as you do, then Calvin comes to sit with us.

And we were terrified by his speech, the self harm marks, the fact that he was smoking, was drunk, and was talking about being nice.

He also didn't believe us about Elliot Minor (or as he kept on saying, Harriet Minor), though we had three tickets, about ten flyers and a big poster.

Which scared us all. Thankfully, he left at Tame Bridge.

Then Aimee drove us home, which was nice, and now I'm finishing this blog post after having a shower to remove the sweat from my person.

Farewell!

1Jul/09

The past week.

Starting with Thursday, Prom. Was a fabulous evening, meal was alright, tunes were fabulous, and more importantly I won the Accessorize award. Oh yes.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday went past quite quickly really. Most of the time was spent playing Monkey Island 2 and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. And I've finished both of them. Starting Curse of Monkey Island later.

Yesterday was strange, had a fun time un-networking and re-networking in different areas, and being introduced into four new Playfish games. Which are very exciting. And addictive.

Today has been pretty boring too, however my 1 TB hard drive arrived and I have lots of space available to me for the first time in months. Lots of good times.

Boring week really.

Gig, day out and parties in the next few days though, so that should be fun.

Farewell!

24Jun/09

Omg she got off the plane!

Friends season finale for the fourth time since I started this blog. How amusing.

Quite surprising to me, sort of, as I haven't really been watching Friends this past run through.

Anyway, yes, the past few days I suppose.

On Monday, I spent most of the day being cool and playing Burnout Paradise, finishing about 50 events and 50 road rules to get the Burnout Elite License, which is now awesome.

On Tuesday, it was Matty's barbecue which was nice, as there was a steakwich and some burgers. Fun day really, as I saw some friends for the first time in a week or so. Also figured out the reason as to why I stopped playing Nuts & Bolts, which is because it was so boring. I may finish the story, but I just can't be bothered.

Today was quite mediocre, got my hair cut and attempted to learn the Single Ladies dance for Prom, which isn't going so well. However, got around to getting ScummVM working so I can play me some Monkey Island.

Obviously also watching Friends season finale, which has just finished. Planning to spend the evening being a pirate in Monkey Island 2, and maybe go back to finally finish Half Life 2: Episode 2. Maybe Oblivion and try to go through the side quests as well as the actually quests, as I managed to avoid most of them last time. Also trying to see if I can spend some money on Firebox to take advantage of a 20% off offer they're having.

Anyway, farewell!

21Jun/09

The last few days.

Thursday was good fun, went to the pub with Chemistry and Physics teachers and got a free drink and dessert from them, and got a meal for £3.50, which was lovely.

Friday was also fun, as I went to Ikea and came back with some frying pans and a spatula for university, which was exciting.

Saturday was also very, very good fun, as there was lots of bouncing involved. This was because Aimee had a bouncy castle at her 18th birthday party, along with a barbecue and booze. There was lots of bouncing, even to the point where after the party it felt weird that I wasn't bouncing. I'm alright now, though, which is awesome. But it was a fantabulous evening.

Today should be pretty mediocre in comparison, as I'm probably going to end up sitting here, playing Burnout all day, along with sifting through the 120 photos from last night. Alright times.

17Jun/09

Wednesday the 17th.

Uploaded a new blog header image that was more appropriate to my current circumstances. Unless you're currently on Facebook. Which is cool. But you're so missing out.

Today was great, went off to Birmingham. Traded in my Wii and an additional remote and nunchuck for £110 trade in at Gamestation, which was nice. I then used that credit to get me a Microsoft Points Card and Lips, with brought me down to £60, which is still a lot of credit that can be spent on some other games later.

Went around, can't quite remember when. But anyway, bought Aimee's birthday presents, bought Alan Carr's autobiography and Russel Brand's latest book, hardcover, £6 for both, which was awesome. Also got some Sharpies to replace the black one that died in November. And they have a fine-liner tip, which I thought was pretty ninja to be honest.

Then we headed home and I played Lips for about five hours. And as expected, spent an entire points card on DLC songs. Got another one coming tomorrow/Friday though, which I'm not going to spend. It's going to sit there until something I actually want comes online.

Anyway, a photo of me revising Physics is shown to the right (or just somewhere on Facebook). Isn't it so fun.

In other news, oh my god Sree is so annoying why don't the bloody housemates nominate him so he can go awayyyy, and they should stop nominating Halfwit as I find him amusing.

That's about it.

Pub today for lunch, pub tomorrow for something. Should be fun whatever happening. Slightly feel a bit bored that I've not got anything planned for Friday. I'm sure I'll cope, I do have access to about five games I want to finish, Scrabble Live, Bejewelled Blitz (if it ever comes back from maintenance), and Zynga Poker.

Oh, and Restaurant City. That's become quite addictive.

I'm bored, or am out of things to say.

Therefore: fareewell!
